Hozier takes The Roxy to Church
Updated: Jul 10, 2019
Irish singer-songwriter Hozier performed to a sold-out show at the Coca-Cola Roxy in Atlanta, last Saturday night. Hozier recently released his recent album Wasteland, Baby! on March 1st and started the tour in Buffalo, New York.
The indie artist is known for his chart topping single 'Take Me to Church' which debuted in 2013 and was Grammy nominated in 2015. Hozier has been awarded for the hit song on the Billboard Music Award for Top Streaming song, UK Festival Award for Summer Anthem and MTV Europe Music Awards for Best Song with a Message all in the same year.
Before the show started, fans eagerly waited outside of the venue and some were taking selfies with his name in the lights. Direct support was a bad ass English singer-songwriter Jade Bird. Bird is heavily influenced by Alanis Morissette, Bob Dylan and Patti Smith. I would describe her genre as a hybrid between folk and alt-pop. With her powerful vocals and raw lyrics, every single girl in the front row was singing word-for-word. Fan favorites were 'Uh Huh', 'Good Woman' and 'Lottery', which were all songs written based on Bird's experiences and lessons learned. The 21-year-old is releasing her self-titled album on April 19th.
The band makes their way to the stage and alas, Hozier humbly walks out as fans are screaming his name. He performed a majority of the songs off of his newly released album such as 'Nina Cried Power', 'Dinner & Diatribes', and Movement. Photographing him in the photo pit was mesmerizing watching him sing effortlessly. He was such a natural at playing guitar, and would switch guitars after almost every song. Kudos to Hozier for having vibrant, talented vocalists and musicians perform with him! All of his band mates felt the energy of Coca-Cola Roxy with the fans cheering and feeling the passion that is shared among them on stage.
To wrap up the show he played the one and only, 'Take Me to Church'. I also think every person would be very upset if they didn't get to hear the song that connected everyone in the room to him. Hozier thanked us all and proudly told us that words can't express how excited he is to be here tonight with us.
