Behind The Lens At Red Bull Showrun Atlanta: Racecars, Brand Activations, And The Art Of Being In Two Places At Once

When Red Bull Showrun Atlanta, presented by Ford Racing, tore down Hank Aaron Drive and Fulton Street through the Summerhill neighborhood, I knew this wasn't going to be a "show up and shoot" kind of event. This was Oracle Red Bull Racing, Visa Cash App Racing Bulls, and Ford performance vehicles going full throttle in the heart of Atlanta, free and open to the public. As an Atlanta event photographer who specializes in brand activation photography, I wasn't just there to capture cars. I was there to capture an experience, and that meant solving a problem before I ever picked up my camera.

The Real Challenge: Racecars Or Activations?

Here's what most people don't think about when they picture a Red Bull event: the cars are the headline, but they're not the whole story. Sponsors like Ford Racing, Visa, Cash App, Oracle, AT&T, Armor All, RaceTrac, and BF Goodrich all had a presence on the ground, with fan zones, merchandise, and activations built to create real moments for attendees. For a brand and event photographer, that creates a genuine dilemma.

Do you camp out early to secure a prime spot along the route for the racecars and motorcycles, or do you spend that time working the crowd and the activations to capture the energy, the branding, and the human moments that sponsors actually pay for?

I chose both on purpose.

Why I Got There Early (And Why It Wasn't Just About The Cars)

I showed up early, not just to claim a good vantage point for the cars, but because early access is exactly when brand activation photography shines. Before the crowds peak, you get cleaner shots of signage, product setups, and sponsor spaces without hundreds of people in the frame. That early window is where strategy and intentionality come together. It's not about luck. It's about being calculated enough to know where the value is before the event even reaches full speed.

That early start gave me room to take a risk later. Once I had strong activation coverage in the bank, I could reposition and go all in on the racecars without feeling like I was sacrificing the sponsor-focused content that brands actually need.

Getting Creative When The Crowd Gets Thick

By the time the Formula 1 cars and motorcycles started running their stunts, the crowd along the route was packed. This is the moment where a lot of photographers get stuck at ground level, fighting for a sightline. I wasn't about to let that happen.

A friend let me climb up on his shoulders to get above the crowd, and that single decision changed my entire shot list. It gave me the elevation to actually see the racecars and motorcycles with a wall of phones and shoulders, but that was only half the battle.

The angle wasn't clean. I still had to get creative with cropping and spend serious time in post pulling those shots apart, editing out distractions, and trusting that I could turn a chaotic angle into something worth posting. A lot of it was blind faith that it would come together once I got into editing. That's the part people don't see: the shot doesn't end when you press the shutter. That's the kind of resourcefulness that separates documentary-style event coverage from photography that actually tells a story worth sharing.

Why Brand Activation Photography Matters As Much As The Main Event

It's easy to assume the racecars are the only thing worth photographing at a Red Bull event, and don't get me wrong, watching Oracle Red Bull Racing and Visa Cash App Racing Bulls vehicles rip down city streets with Ford performance vehicles alongside them was genuinely one of the coolest things I've shot all year. But the sponsors on site invested real budget into those activations, and that's content they need just as much as the hero shots of the cars.

Strong brand activation photography does a few things a wide shot of a racecar never will:

  • It shows how a brand shows up in a real environment, not just on a page
  • It captures attendee engagement, which is what sponsors ultimately use to justify their investment
  • It gives brands a library of usable content for social, recap decks, and future sponsorship pitches

Balancing both is where the real skill comes in, and it's exactly the kind of coverage I bring to every event I shoot, whether it's a global brand like Red Bull or a local activation.

The Result: A Full Story, Not Just A Highlight Reel

By combining early strategic positioning, intentional risk-taking, and a little bit of creative problem-solving (thank you again to my friend and his shoulders), I walked away with a complete visual story of Red Bull Showrun Atlanta. Not just the racecars mid-stunt, not just the sponsor activations, but the full experience that made the event what it was.

That's the standard I hold every shoot to. Whether it's a motorsport event, a product launch, or a full-scale brand activation, I'm thinking about how to capture the entire narrative, not just the obvious moment.

Looking For An Event Photographer, Brand Activation Photographer, Or Content Partner?

Here's the thing about event photos and videos: they can't just look good. They need to work for your business.

Every brand and event I shoot for is trying to solve the same problem: a content bucket that actually holds up. Not a handful of nice shots you post once and forget, but a real library of photo and video content that fuels your social channels and website for weeks after the event wraps. That's what sponsors need to justify their spend, and it's what brands need to stay visible between activations instead of going quiet until the next one.

If you're a brand, agency, or event organizer looking for an event photographer or brand activation photographer who understands how to balance the main attraction with the sponsor and activation content your marketing team actually needs, let's talk. I specialize in event photography, brand activation photography, and ongoing content partnerships built around one goal: giving you a steady, usable supply of content, not a one-off gallery.

Whether you're planning your next activation in Atlanta or looking for a content partner who can show up, execute a strategy, and deliver content your team can put to work immediately, I'd love to be part of it.

Reach out and let's build a content bucket that actually serves your brand.
