Why Brand Activations Matter At Music Festivals: A Photographer's Take From Shaky Knees

One of my favorite photos I've ever taken is from Liquid Death's activation at Shaky Knees Music Festival in Atlanta. Someone is getting an airbrush tattoo, and the whole setup has a vibe you can almost hear.

The photo that started it all.

It was my first year on the festival's media team. Honestly, I didn't really know what "brand activation work" meant yet. I had no strategy and no checklist for what made activation content good as opposed to just a nice photo. I only knew that whatever energy was happening in that tent, I needed to catch it. The brand, the moment, and the chaos of it all had to fit in one frame, and somehow it did.

That was before activations really took off. Now I'm a seasoned activation photographer who spends a lot of time in festival culture, and I shoot these spaces on purpose. Here's what I've learned about why brand activations matter so much at music festivals, and what separates the ones people love from the ones they walk past.

What Is A Brand Activation At A Music Festival?

A music festival brand activation is a physical, branded space inside the festival grounds where attendees can interact with a brand directly. That might mean free samples, giveaways, customizable merch, photo ops, games, shade, seating, or a better view of the stage. The best ones feel like a small world inside the bigger world of the festival: somewhere people choose to spend time, not just a booth they pass on the way to a set.

Hear Me Out: Festivals Are Not Influencer Trips

Respectfully, music festivals are not curated influencer trips. People travel from all over the country to be there. They're hot, they're tired, they've been standing for hours, and they're there for the music.

So when they come across your activation, presentation is everything. You're competing with the headliner, the food trucks, and the need to sit down for five minutes. The activations that win give people real reasons to stop:

  • Free product, with more available to buy
  • Giveaways people actually want
  • Customizable products they'll wear or use long after the festival
  • Somewhere to sit and hang out, away from the crowds
  • Shade. Never underestimate shade.
  • Photo ops that look good on camera and on a phone
  • A brand personality that isn't basic

When an activation gets these right, the photos almost take themselves, because people are having a genuinely good time.

6 Brand Activations That Got It Right At Shaky Knees

There were plenty of activations on the grounds, but these are the ones that stood out to me, and the ones I was on assignment to photograph.

1. Liquid Death: A Vibey House That Takes Risks

Liquid Death is where it started for me, and it still delivers. The activation was a vibey house with airbrush tattoos, free ice-cold water and sparkling water, and plenty of room for photo ops. It works because the brand isn't basic. Liquid Death is all about taking risks, and the space feels like it: a little weird, a lot of fun, and completely on brand.

2. Señorita: 4:20 Giveaways And Custom Hats

Señorita is a THC margarita seltzer, a light, bubbly alternative to alcohol for people who want to relax without the hangover. The activation, the website, and the product itself are all 21+.

The activation leaned into that energy. At 4:20 they gave away 420 beverages (yes, really). There was a hat customization station where people picked their own patches for a Señorita-branded hat, which is great for building brand loyalty because people keep and wear it. They also had free samples, plenty of giveaways, and somewhere to sit and chill out.

3. Sun Cruiser: Two Stories Of Shade With A Stage View

Sun Cruiser was one of the best places to beat the heat. The two-story space had indoor games where people could win prizes, with the AC running the whole time.

4. Chase Freedom: The Best Seat In The House

Chase Freedom's activation offered what might be the most valuable thing at any festival: a great view. With an incredible vantage point over the Peachtree stage (the main stage at Shaky Knees) and happy hour giveaways, it was a place to hang out and watch sets without fighting the crowd.

5. Tombstone Pizza: Free Pizza, Neon, And A Grim Reaper

Who doesn't want a free slice of pizza, am I right? Tombstone kept it simple with free slices and temporary tattoos to take with you.

They also brought an Airstream that people could decorate with colorful markers, and by the end it was covered in names, doodles, and pizza opinions.

Then there was the neon photo op, with a grim reaper and a tombstone lit up in neon. It was interactive, a little spooky, and very shareable.

6. Sierra Nevada: A Trip (Pun Intended)

Sierra Nevada's activation was a trip, pun intended. Their Hazy Little Hideaway highlighted the Hazy Little Thing IPA in a two-level space where people could hang out on the balcony or post up on the steps outside, with beer for sale and plenty of spots to take a break.

Inside, there was a hidden room with its own photo op, and it was total vibes in there.

And then there was the optical illusion photo op, which stopped people in their tracks.

Long Lines Vs. People Having Fun: What's Worth Photographing?

This is where my approach as an activation photographer has changed the most.

Photos of long lines are fine. They show demand. But look closely at most line photos and everybody looks bored, melting under the blazing sun. That isn't the story you want your brand telling.

So ask yourself: what do you want the visual impact to be, a long line or people actually enjoying your activation?

I photograph the experience: the airbrush tattoo mid-stroke, the friend group comparing custom hats, the person on the balcony with a drink and a view of the stage. That's the content that shows other people what it feels like to be there, and it makes them want to be there next year.

What Brands Should Take Away

If you're planning a music festival brand activation, here's what I'd focus on:

  • Design for how people feel at a festival: hot, tired, and overstimulated. Shade, seating, and cold drinks are not extras.
  • Give them something to do, not just something to take. Customization, games, and decorating stations create moments worth photographing.
  • Let your brand personality show. The activations people remember are the ones that take a risk.
  • Build in photo ops on purpose, for your photographer and for attendees' phones.
  • Hire a photographer who understands activations. The goal isn't to document that it happened. It's to capture why people loved it.

Looking back at that first Liquid Death photo, I didn't have it all figured out, and I didn't need to. I just paid attention and trusted what felt right. Now I do the same thing, just with a lot more intention.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes a good brand activation at a music festival?

A good festival activation gives attendees a reason to stay: free product, giveaways, customizable merch, shade, seating, photo ops, or a great view of the stage. It should also reflect the brand's personality, so the experience feels memorable and not generic.

Why are brand activations important at music festivals?

Festivals put brands in front of a large, engaged audience in a setting where people are open to new experiences. A strong activation builds real positive associations with the brand and creates content that attendees share on their own.

What brands had activations at Shaky Knees?

Activations at Shaky Knees Music Festival in Atlanta have included Liquid Death, Señorita, Sun Cruiser, Chase Freedom, Tombstone Pizza, and Sierra Nevada, among others.

How should brand activations be photographed?

Focus on people enjoying the experience rather than lines or empty setups. Capture the interactive moments (customization stations, games, photo ops, people relaxing) that show what the activation feels like from the inside.

Do I need a specialized photographer for a festival activation?

It helps. An experienced activation photographer knows how to capture the brand, the crowd, and the energy in one frame, and delivers content that's useful for marketing, social media, and sponsor reporting.
