All Night Long: The Lionel Richie Experience In Atlanta
Lionel Richie, an Atlanta native, commanded the stage in front of 15,000 fans at State Farm Arena. As a concert photographer covering the show, I had a front-row view of a true hometown homecoming.
He was backed by a full band that played multiple instruments while joining him on stage: playing, dancing, and moving with him all night. You could tell they're part of Lionel's family. Touring isn't easy, so the people you surround yourself with matter more than most people realize.
Lionel played hit after hit, keeping the night running: "Running with the Night," "Stuck on You," "Sail On," "Dancing on the Ceiling," "Brick House," "Say You, Say Me," "We Are the World," and of course, he closed with "All Night Long." There was pyro, air bursts, and cryo. It's a full-blown production from start to finish.
Throughout the set, Lionel got emotional: cracking jokes, waving to fans, and expressing genuine gratitude to the crowd. It's rare to see an artist of his stature stay that present with an audience this size, and it made for some of the most authentic moments to capture through the lens.
Shooting a show like this is a reminder of why I love live music photography: the energy, the production, the split-second moments that only happen once. Covering a Lionel Richie concert in Atlanta was a career highlight, and I can't wait for the next one.
